Question

Consider the single switch VLAN in Figure 5.25, and assume an external router is connected to switch port 1. Assign IP addresses to the EE and CS hosts and router interface. Trace the steps taken at both the network layer and the link layer to transfer an IP datagram from an EE host to a CS host (Hint: reread the discussion of Figure 5.19 in the text).

Answer

  • Consider the single switch VLAN in Figure 5.25 in the given textbook. Assign IP addresses to the EE and CS hosts and router interface. The first 8 ports are used for EE hosts, 111.111.111/24 and router interface, 0-255.
  • Trace the steps taken at both the network layer and the link layer to transfer an IP datagram from an EE host to a CS host.
  • The continuing 8 ports are used for CS hosts and router interface.  The subnet mask address is 222.222.222/24. The prefix ranges from 0-255 as well as.
  • Host A initially compresses the IP datagram with the destination address 222.222.222.222 into a frame.
  • The destination MAC address is equal to router’s interface for the Port 1 switch.
  • The switch forwards the Port 1  to Host B  is CS department.
  • The Host B eliminates the 802.1q TAG if it obtains the frame.
