Question

What does it mean to say that a nonce is a once-in-a-lifetime value? In whose lifetime?

Answer

A nonce is a number that a protocol will use only once. That means that once a protocol used a nonce, it will never use that number again.

  • The lifetime is the one of the protocol.
  • In SSL, nonces are used to defend against the “connection replay attack”.
