Answer

Function of an I/O interface :

  • An I/O interface is bridge between processor and I/O devices.
  • It controls data exchange between external devices and main memory or external devices and processor registers.
  • So an I/O interface offers an interface internal to computer which connects it to processor and main memory and an interface external to computer connecting it to external device or peripheral.
  • I/O interface must not only communicate the information from processor to main I/O device but it must also coordinate these two.
  • Additionally since there are speed differences between I/O devices and processor, I/O interface must have facilities such as buffer and error detection mechanism.
